County Commission meets today
Chaves County commissioners are expected to approve a special use permit for a solar energy facility during a County Commission meeting, today.Another item on the agenda is a vote on whether to allow American Utility Consultants to perform an audit of all Chaves County telephone and utility bills. Chaves County will pay the company 32 percent of all money recovered through refunds or credits. If no money is recovered, the County will not be required to cover any costs.

Elm trees in Chaves County are looking brown and shabby. The culprit is a small insect known as the elm leaf beetle.Elm leaf beetles are about the size of a ladybug. They are yellow to light green with black stripes. Elm leaf beetles do not transmit Dutch elm disease.

The gold medal shuffle
Chaves County native Larry Martin competes in the shuffleboard competition at the New Mexico Senior Olympic Games in Las Cruces. Martin won the gold medal in the shuffleboard singles and also won gold in the shuffleboard doubles competition. He also won a silver medal for his solo comedy performance. In all, seniors from Chaves County won 55 golds, 37 silvers and 25 bronzes.

The mood was tense at the Chaves County 4-H & FFA Fair Market Lamb Show Wednesday, when months of preparation culminated with an about three-hour heated competition.“It’s really exciting because I worked really hard and it shows all your hard work paid off,” said Jessica Burson, the 16-year-old Goddard High School student and handler of the grand champ lamb.
